The Power of Democracy Civic Learning Initiative is supported by the California courts and a network of educators. A panel of 12 volunteers come forward annually to score applications. All identifying information is redacted before being shared with the panel. Before applications are forwarded to judges, fictitious names replace the school name, mascot, county, district, and other identifying details.

 

Each application receives a review by a team. The team scores are then averaged. In the event of a tie, bonus point credits are added to determine the level of honor.

Can Past Honorees be Honored Again?

From 2020-2023, the program pushed through the pandemic in various ways following public health mandates and in response to school and court needs county-by-county. Award events were held online, with award co-sponsors the Chief Justice and State Superintendent of Public Instruction joining our online "Celebration of Civics." 

 

This year, we're back with a refresh. All schools are eligible to apply and be scored and honored, regardless of previous honors. 

 

Judges are looking to see an overall commitment from the district and surrounding community, with local government engagement, and student leadership. These awards don't celebrate school spirit. They celebrate the potential of a student body that is prepared to participate in and lead in their communities in the future. These awards celebrate a body of students who know their role in society and their responsibility to uphold their democracy. supported and empowered by educators.
